WE HAD THE DESIRE TO BREAK IT ALL is a documentary that moves between observation and complicity. Set initially in Havana, the film follows Ava, a trans actress who decides to take control of her own representation, inviting the director to construct a film alongside her.
What begins as an act of documentation evolves into a constant negotiation between life, performance, and fiction. Ava does not simply inhabit the camera; she tensions it, seduces it, and challenges it. Her desire is not to be documented, but to rewrite herself.
More than a traditional documentary, the film proposes an intimate relationship with its protagonist, where cinema operates as a space for affective and political experimentation.
Synopsis
“Ava and I share something in common: a persistent urge to experiment with love, to break everything apart. During an impossible summer in Havana, Ava, a young trans artist, asks me to film a fiction so she can kiss the boy she likes. We become accomplices in that impulse, using cinema as a refuge to rewrite our own story and escape a reality in crisis.”
Director´ statement
From my time in Cuba, one image returns to me again and again: myself standing, exhausted and completely lost in the streets of Havana. Suddenly, an angel appears, a trans girl with rebellion embedded in her body and a sensitivity capable of transforming what seemed impossible into a great adventure.
Cinema became a means to organize time and reconstruct worlds. This film is my memory of Ava, of our friendship and our adventures, in the midst of a city that felt as though it might cease to exist at any moment. It is a response to the void of an irreparable reality, where fantasy remains a possible place
